In March this year, after a long campaign, Cllr Jon Hubbard finally succeeded in getting Melksham Area Board to fund a feasibility study into installing a new pedestrian crossing onto Queensway, near the junction with Pembroke Road. Now the scheme has moved into the planning stage, so local residents can soon expect to see building work begin.
Commenting, Jon said “A lot of local people have asked me about this as I run my regular Resident’s Survey. A new crossing will make Queensway safer, and I’m pleased to see the feasibility study I initiated turn out a good result for locals. "It's a shame that these things take so long - I have been working for this for several years - but I am delighted that the residents will finally be seeing the crossing they have been asking for installed."
Recently elected Town Councillor Pat Aves (Lib Dem) said “We want this new crossing to be just the start of a road safety revolution in Melksham. The local Lib Dems are calling for 20mph limits on all residential roads in Melksham, for instance Hazelwood Road, roads in the Kennilworth Estate, and roads coming off Queensway. Evidence elsewhere shows theses limits are cheap, and save lives. We think twenty’s plenty where people live.”
